GitHub Game Off 2017 - Day 7

Today went bust for me! We have a charity project at our church and we were out buying Christmas presents for people less fortunate. I’m also writing this just before I’m off to go and watch Jigsaw with my other cousin. Low fidelity sounds I’m mostly on a quest currently to try and produce some sounds that will fit the idea I have in mind. I’m going for an approach whereby I’m producing all the sounds with my voice/mouth, but I’m still at a loss for the falling sound as well as the parachute opening. ...

GitHub Game Off 2017 - Day 5

Day 5 had flown past and I suspect we did not really get much done. It’s my cousin’s birthday tomorrow so we spent some time with his family. I initially wanted to do a lot more recording, but I ended up fiddling around too much with what Matt had already done. I was super impressed with his parachute solution that he mentioned in yesterday’s update. We have sound! It’s very basic, but below you’ll find the first gunshot sound I’ve recorded. ...

GitHub Game Off 2017 - Day 3

Day 3 has come and gone! I awoke to an invite from my cousin to collaborate on the repo he had created on GibHub as well as a bare-bones structure of the initial repository. We had a quick chat on Slack discussing what he had done as well as the little bits he’d already implemented. I must say I was very impressed to hear that he’d already figured out how the turret should function. ...

GitHub Game Off 2017 - Day 1

I am in! Sadly my day 1 update will only be that I’ll be partifcipating and not much more. The theme was announced around 23:37 local time here in South Africa so I was fast asleep by the time it went live. Throwback Shortly after I woke up this morning I quickly searched to see what the theme is. What I found was that it is a nice broad theme and I’m looking forward to making something that will hopefully fit it. ...

Exploring DDD in Game Dev

I thought I’d write this post while I’m still fresh with some experience from GitHub Game Off 2016, Ludum Dare 37 and the Entelect Jam #2. I’ve had some interesting approaches to solving each of the unique problems and also had some help with some of the solutions, but I’m just going to explore some of the first ideas that came up. One thing to note though is that this article is not so much the how to solve a problem using DDD, but rather to show some of the challenges with having to interact with a domain in a minimalistic enough way as to ensure that you don’t end up bleeding implementation details across boundaries. ...

GitHub Game Off 2016 - Update

So I’ve been quite absent the past few days and I thought to just write this last post as an update on the plans. Well to be really honest there are no more plans. I had to deal with some personal issues so I fell so behind schedule that I can’t make up for lost time. Last Chance This does not mean I won’t be submitting anything. I’ll finish up and get an exe done and submitted on the last day of the jam. ...

GitHub Game Off 2016 - Day 23

Today I managed to spend quite a bit of time on my game. As seen in the screenshot below I’ve added shoot functionality to the turret and also started looking at making a nice tiled background. Unfortunately the current lasers shot out do no damage, but I’ll have to clean up the code first to make working with it a bit easier. I’m quite happy with how things are looking now, but I’ve still got a bit of a way to go. ...

GitHub Game Off 2016 - Day 22

So I managed to completely wreck my project today. For some reason the sudden inclusion of UnityEngine.dll as part of my domain output is causing Unity to have a freak-out and not want to run my game. As I’m writing this I’m thinking of ways to get past this, but I’ve had no success yet. On the plus side I changed the Pixels Per Unit setting on my spritesheet import to a number that’s two to the power of x. ...

GitHub Game Off 2016 - Day 21

So today was a bit of a write off. I merely sat and thought about stuff (while writing them down of course) which led me to not really doing anything. I did however decide on not going crazy on the different turrets in the game and just sticking with what I know I can implement in time. This did lead me onto another thought. Motivation I’m not completely writing off the day as I’ve realized a big driving factor the past week has been motivation (or lack thereof). ...
